Knowing these will help you to sound more&nbsp;<strong>natural<\/strong>&nbsp;when you speak English, and you\u2019ll be able to&nbsp;<strong>understand the natives more easily too!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8 Weird English Expressions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1) To bite the bullet<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Originating from the army\/navy world, this expression means to have to do something you don\u2019t want to do \u2013 something unpleasant, but necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Examples<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI hate going to the dentist, but my tooth hurts, so I\u2019ll have to&nbsp;bite the bullet&nbsp;and make an appointment today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cYou\u2019re going to have to&nbsp;bite the bullet&nbsp;and tell your friend the truth about what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2) By the skin of my teeth<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">A particularly weird expression, this means to&nbsp;<em>barely&nbsp;<\/em>manage to do something. \u2018By the skin of my teeth\u2019 actually comes from the King James Bible (Job 19:20), where these lines can be found:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>My bone cleaveth to my skin and to my flesh, and I am<strong>&nbsp;escaped with the skin of my teeth<\/strong><\/em><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Example&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI can\u2019t believe we took so long to complete that project \u2013 we managed just&nbsp;by the skin of our teeth!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3) To butter up<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Butter? The food? What?! Don\u2019t worry, we\u2019re not going to be throwing butter on anyone. To \u2018butter [someone] up\u2019 means to praise or flatter someone a lot, usually because you need something from the person being buttered up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Examples<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Jack: \u201cDid I tell you how amazing you look today? Your hair looks really nice. And your eyes are pretty too. Have I mentioned that you look amazing?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Marie: \u201cStop trying to&nbsp;butter me up, Jack. I\u2019m still angry at you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4) To kick the bucket<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This odd idiom is an informal\/slang term meaning \u2018to die\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Examples<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI\u2019d love to go on a tour of South America before I&nbsp;kick the bucket!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWhat happened to your buddy, Jeff?\u201d \u201cDidn\u2019t you hear? He&nbsp;kicked the bucket&nbsp;yesterday \u2013 he was 102 years old!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5) Bob<\/strong>&#8216;<strong>s your uncle<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Who is Bob, and why is he your uncle?! This interesting slang expression means something like \u2018there it is\u2019, \u2018there you have it\u2019 or \u2018you\u2019re all set\u2019. It\u2019s usually used after explaining something or giving a list of simple instructions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Example<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cHow do I unlock your phone?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIt\u2019s easy \u2013 just press that button, type in my birthday, and&nbsp;Bob\u2019s your uncle!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cOh I see \u2013 thanks!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>6) To eat humble pie<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">If someone needs to \u2018eat humble pie\u2019, it means that they should stop being proud and give in to something that they think is \u2018below\u2019 them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Example<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cEly needs to&nbsp;eat some humble pie&nbsp;and apologise for what she said to you yesterday. It was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>7)  To wear your heart on your sleeve<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">If someone wears their heart on their sleeve, that means the person is very honest, open, and transparent about their emotions. They don\u2019t try to hide what they\u2019re feeling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Example<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThat player really&nbsp;wears his heart on his sleeve&nbsp;\u2013 he cried when they won the match yesterday!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cTanja is a really lovely girl. She\u2019s smart, funny, and&nbsp;wears her heart on her sleeve, so you always know where you are with her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>8) To twist someone<\/strong>&#8216;<strong>s arm<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This one might sound painful, but it\u2019s just a figure of speech, so don\u2019t worry!
