Sometimes, the English language can present challenges to learners and native speakers alike with its many intricacies and subtle (but important) differences. One thing\u2019s for certain \u2013 learning and using these tricky bits of language is always a very rewarding task! Today, we\u2019re taking a closer look at learnt<\/strong> and learned<\/strong> \u2013 what\u2019s the difference? When do we use them?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Learned\u2019 and \u2018learnt\u2019 are both used as the past participle and past tense forms of the verb \u2018to learn\u2019. Both versions of the word are actually correct and widely used in the English-speaking world, but there is one small difference between the two words. \u2018Learned\u2019 is the preferred way of spelling in the US and Canada, while \u2018learnt\u2019 is favoured in British English. The important thing to remember when studying English at EC English<\/a> is that while both versions are correct, you should always try to use the same spelling consistently throughout a piece of writing, no matter which one you choose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But wait just a second\u2026<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s (almost) always an exception to any rule you can think of. The word \u2018learned\u2019 also exists as an adjective<\/strong> to describe someone who is well-read, knowledgeable, and has quite a strong educational background. \u2018Learned\u2019 (adjective) is pronounced differently<\/strong> from \u2018learned\u2019 (verb)\u2019 \u2013 just take a look at the examples below!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
