To help you to memorise them, download the free eBook to revise and practise them with your classmates, friends and teachers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Put Down<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The phrasal verb \u2018put down\u2019 has two primary meanings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">To stop holding something and place it somewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:2px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>Slowly <strong>put down<\/strong> the gun and keep your hands where I can see them.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>Slowly <strong>put<\/strong> the gun <strong>down<\/strong> and keep your hands where I can see them.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Wait a second!<\/strong> <strong>We also use \u2018can&#8217;t put (something) down\u2019 as an idiom to describe something we are reading that is so interesting that we don&#8217;t want to stop reading it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>Have you read the new Harry Potter book? It&#8217;s impossible to <strong>put down<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>The novel was so exciting that I <strong>couldn&#8217;t put<\/strong> it <strong>down<\/strong>. I read it all night.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">We\u2019re not done yet \u2013 there\u2019s one more meaning to look at before we continue:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:2px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u2018<strong>To put down<\/strong>\u2019 can also mean \u2018to say something negative to someone because you want to make them feel less confident.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Katerina doesn\u2019t like his new boss. He keeps <strong>putting<\/strong> people <strong>down<\/strong> and the employees are unhappy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Bring Down<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u2018To bring down\u2019&nbsp;means \u2018to make someone feel sad or depressed, unhappy or exhausted..<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>This rainy weather is really&nbsp;<strong>bringing<\/strong>&nbsp;me&nbsp;<strong>down<\/strong>.&nbsp;<em>(The weather is making me feel sad)<\/em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Let Down<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The phrasal verb \u2018let down\u2019 has two primary meanings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u2018To let down\u2019&nbsp;means to <strong>disappoint<\/strong> <em>someone<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:2px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>You really <strong>let <\/strong>me <strong>down<\/strong> this time.<\/em> <em>(You disappointed me this time)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>You can trust Cristian to help you. He never&nbsp;<strong>lets<\/strong>&nbsp;his friends&nbsp;<strong>down<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">To let down also means to <strong>lower<\/strong> <em>something<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:2px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p
