{"id":20693,"date":"2025-03-11T09:18:57","date_gmt":"2025-03-11T09:18:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ec.itmonks.dev\/en\/?p=20693"},"modified":"2025-05-07T07:19:47","modified_gmt":"2025-05-07T07:19:47","slug":"onomatopoeia-words-that-sound-so-real","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ec.itmonks.dev\/en\/blog\/english\/onomatopoeia-words-that-sound-so-real\/","title":{"rendered":"Onomatopoeia, words that sound so real!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Onomatopoeia words are words which sound like the action they describe, like splash, crash, and swoosh for example.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Many languages have words which are onomatopoeic and here are some of the numerous examples in the English language which we have put into groups.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Animal related words<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-link-color wp-elements-8616f16c24f359eb86297360397f9766\">The examples in the animal grouping, we all learned as children, but it is interesting to note that different countries have different ones. We will just share the English ones to keep it simple, but this is a fun topic to discuss with classmates when you come to one of our <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.itmonks.dev\/en\/schools\/\">English language centres<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:3px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Woof \u2013 dog barking&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Chirp \u2013 bird sound&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Purr \u2013 cat sound&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Ribbit \u2013 the noise a frog makes&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Human speech and sounds.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Interestingly, words that are describing sounds that come out of the mouth usually start with mu- , whereas those that come from the back of the throat have gr- at the beginning.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Blurt \u2013 to say something quickly that wasn\u2019t supposed to be said\u2026.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:3px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Chatter \u2013 constant talk, usually about nothing in particular. Also used when it is very cold \u2013 you can say \u201cmy teeth were chattering.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Groan \u2013 the moaning sound people make when they don\u2019t want to do something or the sound an elderly or infirm person makes when getting up from a chair for example.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Mumble \u2013 when someone doesn\u2019t speak clearly or confidently, they are said to \u2018mumble.\u2019&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Collision related words<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Comics books make much use of this type of word. Batman and his POW in a font that feels like it is coming towards you, is probably the first occurrence we all register.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:3px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Slap \u2013 to hit hard with one\u2019s flat hand, though can also be use colloquially \u2013 \u201cthe warden slapped a speeding ticket on my car windscreen\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Bang \u2013 a loud noise. Words ending in -ng are usually sounds that resonate.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Jingle \u2013 describes moving items usually made of metal but also means the music associated with advertisements.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Crash \u2013items colliding which are usually describing items made of glass or metal.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Words related to Water<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Lots of words that relate to water in this series of words start with sp- or dr- and often end in -le when related to a small body of water.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:3px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Dribble \u2013 the fluid that oozes from the mouth of a baby, a drunk person or a dog.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Drip \u2013 a drop of water from, for example a tap which is often rhythmic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Splash \u2013 a body of water that is agitated \/ disturbed and moves onto anther surface; for example when a car drives through a puddle and splashes a pedestrian on a pavement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Squirt \u2013 a short burst of a fluid, like when you squeeze a tube of cream or toothpaste and it makes a noise. Also slang for a small annoying person.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Words describing Air<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Swoosh \u2013 the sound made by speeding air like when in an aeroplane.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Gasp \u2013 a sharp intake of breath taken when you are shocked or about to go underwater.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Flutter \u2013 the gentle movement of a butterfly or leaves falling from a tree&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Whiff &#8211;&nbsp; a smell or a sense of recognition, can be light or strong.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:3px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">When you listen to children\u2019s programmes or hear them play, a lot of these words will be used, but they are also used by adults telling stories and describing events and in colloquial English by native speakers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
