Don&#8217;t worry&#8230; the rules are pretty simple!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Indefinite Articles<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u2022 \u2018A\u2019 and \u2018An\u2019 are the indefinite articles. They refer to something not specifically known to the person you are communicating with.<br>\u2022 \u2018A\u2019 and \u2018An\u2019 are used before nouns that introduce something or someone you have not mentioned before:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:2px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>&#8220;I saw <strong>an<\/strong> elephant this morning&#8221;<br>&#8220;I ate <strong>a<\/strong> banana for lunch&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u2022 \u2018A\u2019 and \u2018An\u2019 are also used when talking about your profession:<br><em>&#8220;I am <strong>an<\/strong> English teacher&#8221;<br>&#8220;I am <strong>a<\/strong> builder&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:2px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u2022 You use \u2018a\u2019 when the noun you are referring to begins with a consonant. For example,&nbsp;<em>&#8220;a city&#8221;<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>&#8220;a factory&#8221;<\/em>, and&nbsp;<em>&#8220;a hotel&#8221;<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:2px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u2022 You use \u2018a\u2019 when the noun you are referring to begins with a vowel (a, e, i, o, u):&nbsp;<em>&#8220;an apple&#8221;,&nbsp;&#8220;an identity&#8221;<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>&#8220;an opportunity&#8221;<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:2px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Take a look at the following sentences.<br>(1)&nbsp;<em>\u201cLooking into the night sky, Adrian thought he saw&nbsp;<strong>a<\/strong>&nbsp;UFO\u201d<\/em><br>(2)&nbsp;<em>\u201cEmily\u2019s flight will be delayed by&nbsp;<strong>an<\/strong>&nbsp;hour\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:2px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In the first sentence (1), we have a UFO (an alien from outer space). UFO begins with the letter \u2018U\u2019, a vowel. But why does this object take the article \u2018a\u2019 and not \u2018an\u2019?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:2px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The answer is simple. When&nbsp;<strong>spoken<\/strong>, we pronounce this vowel with the consonant sound&nbsp;<strong>\/j\/<\/strong>&nbsp;(or \u201cyuh\u201d). So, \u2018UFO\u2019 actually begins with the same sound as that found at the beginning of \u2018<strong>y<\/strong>ellow\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:2px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In the second sentence (2), we have a similar situation. Although \u2018hour\u2019 begins with a consonant, when&nbsp;<strong>spoken<\/strong>, we actually pronounce this \u2018h\u2019 as the long vowel&nbsp;<strong>\/a\u028a\/<\/strong>&nbsp;(or \u201cow\u201d). This is the sound found in words such as \u2018p<strong>o<\/strong>wer\u2019, \u2018fl<strong>o<\/strong>wer\u2019 and \u2018sh<strong>o<\/strong>wer&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Now, what about &#8216;the&#8217;?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong><em>&#8216;The&#8217;&nbsp;<\/em>Definite Article<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:2px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u2022 We use the definite article when we know that the listener is familiar with the particular person or \u2018thing\u2019 we are talking about:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:2px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>&#8220;<strong>The<\/strong> apple you ate was rotten.&#8221;<\/em><br><em>&#8220;Did you lock <strong>the<\/strong> car?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:1px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u2022 We should also use &#8216;the&#8217; when we have&nbsp;<strong>already mentioned<\/strong>&nbsp;the &#8216;thing&#8217; we are talking about:<br><em>&#8220;She&#8217;s got two children; a girl and a boy. <strong>The<\/strong> girl is eight and <strong>the<\/strong> boy is fourteen&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u2022 Finally, we use the to talk about geographical points on the globe:<br><em><strong>The<\/strong> Great Wall of China, <strong>The<\/strong> Atlantic Ocean<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Remember these basics and turn your English from a &#8216;zero&#8217; to &#8216;hero&#8217;!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-6e90a8a50ec6edcfe6b575a5bd8a9fb9\">Learn more about how you can&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.itmonks.dev\/en\/schools\/\">learn English abroad with EC English<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-2a0df2af240d4da627642c17ad2174fe\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Articles can be confusing. &#8216;A&#8217; doctor or &#8216;the&#8217; doctor? &#8216;The&#8217; eraser or &#8216;an&#8217; eraser?
