Articles can be confusing. ‘A’ doctor or ‘the’ doctor? ‘The’ eraser or ‘an’ eraser? Don’t worry… the rules are pretty simple!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indefinite Articles<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 \u2018A\u2019 and \u2018An\u2019 are the indefinite articles. They refer to something not specifically known to the person you are communicating with.
\u2022 \u2018A\u2019 and \u2018An\u2019 are used before nouns that introduce something or someone you have not mentioned before:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

“I saw an<\/strong> elephant this morning”
“I ate a<\/strong> banana for lunch”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 \u2018A\u2019 and \u2018An\u2019 are also used when talking about your profession:
“I am an<\/strong> English teacher”
“I am a<\/strong> builder”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 You use \u2018a\u2019 when the noun you are referring to begins with a consonant. For example, “a city”<\/em>, “a factory”<\/em>, and “a hotel”<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 You use \u2018a\u2019 when the noun you are referring to begins with a vowel (a, e, i, o, u): “an apple”, “an identity”<\/em> and “an opportunity”<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Take a look at the following sentences.
(1) \u201cLooking into the night sky, Adrian thought he saw a<\/strong> UFO\u201d<\/em>
(2) \u201cEmily\u2019s flight will be delayed by an<\/strong> hour\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

In the first sentence (1), we have a UFO (an alien from outer space). UFO begins with the letter \u2018U\u2019, a vowel. But why does this object take the article \u2018a\u2019 and not \u2018an\u2019?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The answer is simple. When spoken<\/strong>, we pronounce this vowel with the consonant sound \/j\/<\/strong> (or \u201cyuh\u201d). So, \u2018UFO\u2019 actually begins with the same sound as that found at the beginning of \u2018y<\/strong>ellow\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the second sentence (2), we have a similar situation. Although \u2018hour\u2019 begins with a consonant, when spoken<\/strong>, we actually pronounce this \u2018h\u2019 as the long vowel \/a\u028a\/<\/strong> (or \u201cow\u201d). This is the sound found in words such as \u2018po<\/strong>wer\u2019, \u2018flo<\/strong>wer\u2019 and \u2018sho<\/strong>wer’.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, what about ‘the’?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘The’ <\/em>Definite Article<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 We use the definite article when we know that the listener is familiar with the particular person or \u2018thing\u2019 we are talking about:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

“The<\/strong> apple you ate was rotten.”<\/em>
“Did you lock the<\/strong> car?”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 We should also use ‘the’ when we have already mentioned<\/strong> the ‘thing’ we are talking about:
“She’s got two children; a girl and a boy. The<\/strong> girl is eight and the<\/strong> boy is fourteen”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Finally, we use the to talk about geographical points on the globe:
The<\/strong> Great Wall of China, The<\/strong> Atlantic Ocean<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
