You&#8217;ll find that many of them are negative exclamations, such as &#8216;Bloody Hell..&#8217;, either male-centric or misogynistic. While some are just plain funny. It&#8217;s definitely a reflection of British character, at least in previous, working class generations. If you&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.itmonks.dev\/en\/schools\/\">Study English Abroad<\/a>, see if you can hear some of these phrases as you explore Britain!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Alright?<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 &nbsp;This is a greeting, comprising &#8216;all right&#8217;, as in; &#8216;is all right with you?&#8217;.&nbsp;It is usually said as a question. An acceptable response would be to mimic the greeting; &#8216;Alright mate&#8217; &#8211;&nbsp;&#8216;Alright&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Ace<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;Positive exclamation,&nbsp;equivalent to &#8216;great!&#8217; or &#8216;Awesome!&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Aye<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 It &nbsp;means yes. It is commonly used in Scotland. It was used in&nbsp;the film \u201dBrave Heart\u201d,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Barry&nbsp;<\/strong>&#8211; Another term from the Scots, meaning &#8216;good&#8217; when exclaimed,&nbsp;or at least &#8216;okay&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Ballistic<\/strong>&nbsp; \u2013 From the original meaning of a type of missile, in slang this describes a fit of&nbsp;anger and rage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Ball and Chain<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 A wife or female spouse. Referring to the ball and chain attached to the ankles of prisoners in times gone by.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Balls up<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 A mistake leading to a negative outcome, equal to &#8216;messed up&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Bloke<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp; Nickname for a male, usually used by males.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Barmy<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Crazy or insane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Beastly<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Nasty, unpleasant, particularly when describing somebodies behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Beef<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Disagreement or physical aggression between people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Beggar Off<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Meaning &#8216;go away&#8217;, an old fashioned term that originated from&nbsp;evicting someone out of your house and effectively telling them to go and beg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Bladdered<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Extremely drunk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Blinding<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Too a great extent. &#8216;It was a blinding performance&#8217; = &#8216;It was a great performance&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Blinkered<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Having a narrow minded attitude or limited view on something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Bloody<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 A very old swear word, one that has become so familiar it is considered more fun than offensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Blooming\/Bleeding<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 A negative adjective, similar to &#8216;Bloody&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Bollocks<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Male reproductive organs, but usually used to describe something as &#8216;rubbish&#8217; or &#8216;no good&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Bravo&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013 Well done, or congratulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Bugger all<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Very little, almost nothing or completely nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Chalk and Cheese&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013 Two things that do not go together, or go together very badly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Chap<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 A man, particularly of gentlemanly nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Chat up<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Speaking flirtatiously, or speaking to someone with the intention of expressing affection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Cheers<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Expressing good wishes with a drink, traditionally glasses are knocked together while &#8216;cheers&#8217; is exclaimed and then a drink is taken. Cheers can also be used generally to replace thanks and as a sign off from a conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Cock up<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 A badly executed plan or a mistake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Cracking<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 A positive exclamation or describing something as good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Crack On<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 To get on with something, or continue doing something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Crikey<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 A neutral exclamation<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Daft<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp; More affectionate today&nbsp;than it was in the past, meaning silly behavior, at worst; stupid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Dapper<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Well dressed and\/or well to-do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Dear<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Dear can mean expensive, but is more commonly a term of endearment, particularly for women or spouses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Dodgy<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp; Bad quality, untrustworthy or dysfunctional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Do-Lally<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Crazy but in a non offensive context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>DIY<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Do It Yourself. Describing actions taken that would usually be left to industrial bodies, synonymous to homemade, or tasks often of a manual labour nature, such as painting and decorating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Ducky<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Term of endearment, particularly for family, women and children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Easy&nbsp;Now<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 A command to calm down or be more gentle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Excuse me<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Asking to be excused for a mistake, addressing a strangers attention, or asking someone to repeat themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Fag \u2013&nbsp;<\/strong>A cigarette.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Fancy \u2013<\/strong>&nbsp;A soft desire for something, including people, food and\/or objects, activities, things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Fiver \u2013&nbsp;<\/strong>5 GBP (Great British Pound)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Flippin&#8217;&nbsp;<\/strong>&#8211; A negative adjective, softer version of a swear word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Foxy Lady&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;<\/strong>An attractive, seductive female.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Freaking Out&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013Not quite panicking, but in an elevated state of confusion or discontent<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Gawp<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;To stare with a gormless expression<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Geezer<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Another male nickname typically used by males.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Gnashers<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Teeth<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Gormless<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Lacking in sense or initiative<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Grub<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Food<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Gutted<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp; Extremely disappointed or upset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Her Majesty\u2019s Pleasure<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Being locked up in prison for life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Hell&nbsp;<\/strong>&#8211; Extreme, such as &#8216;hell of a storm&#8217;, or an addition to an exclamation such as &#8216;bloody hell&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>I&#8217;ll Give You What For!&nbsp;<\/strong>&#8211; An old expression meaning I&#8217;ll hurt you, born out of a response to disobedience. I.e the disobedient one in response to an instruction such as &#8216;go do this&#8217; replies &#8216;what for?&#8217; so the instructor<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Jolly Good<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Very good<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Keep&nbsp;Calm and Carry On&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013 Not&nbsp;really slang, but the text of a very common poster during WWII, which is now wide spread and vastly readapted to different contexts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Knackered<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp; Physically or mentally exhausted, tired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Knockers&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013 The female bosoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Loaded<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Wealthy, rich or having a lot of money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Loony\/Loopy<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 A mad or crazy person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Lost the Plot<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Gone crazy, not following the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Lovely-Jubbly<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Equal to &#8216;lovely&#8217;, a positive exclamation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Malarkey&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013 Stuff, or the subject of conversation. &#8216;What&#8217;s all that malarkey they were discussing?&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Meh<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 21st century exclamation of little consideration, equal to &#8216;who cares?&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Mint \u2013&nbsp;<\/strong>An item in perfect condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Minted \u2013&nbsp;<\/strong>Very wealthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Mufti<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 An old army term for your non-military clothing. Used in schools for non-uniform days i.e Mufti-days<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Mug<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 A na\u00efve or gullible person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Na<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Nicked<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Commonly used as alternative to &#8216;stolen&#8217;.
