Check out our lesson on the <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.itmonks.dev\/en\/learn-english-for-free\/vocabulary\/the-8-parts-of-speech\/\">8 parts of speech<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Take a look at the following examples of <strong>nouns<\/strong>, <strong>verbs<\/strong>, <strong>adjectives<\/strong>, <strong>adverbs<\/strong>, <strong>prepositions<\/strong>, <strong>subjects <\/strong>and <strong>objects<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>&#8220;I lost my pen&#8221;<\/em> \u2013 <em>Pen <\/em>is a <strong>noun <\/strong>(it\u2019s a thing).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>&#8220;They ran all the way home.&#8221;<\/em> \u2013 <em>Ran <\/em>is a <strong>verb <\/strong>(an action).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>&#8220;You are a pretty girl.&#8221;<\/em> \u2013 <em>Pretty <\/em>is an <strong>adjective <\/strong>(it describes the noun girl).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>&#8220;He quietly opened the door.&#8221;<\/em> \u2013 <em>Quietly <\/em>is an <strong>adverb <\/strong>(it describes how he opened the door).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>&#8220;The spider ran across the table.&#8221; <\/em>\u2013 <em>Across <\/em>is a <strong>preposition <\/strong>(it shows the relationship between ran and table).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>&#8220;Paper is made from wood.&#8221;<\/em> \u2013 <em>Paper <\/em>is the <strong>subject <\/strong>(it\u2019s what the sentence is about).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>&#8220;Joe ate his banana.&#8221; <\/em>\u2013 <em>Banana <\/em>is the <strong>object <\/strong>(it\u2019s what the action is done to).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">These roles help us understand the structure and meaning of sentences. Keep an eye on how words change depending on how they\u2019re used!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Object vs Subject<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The subject is usually the word that does something; whereas, the object is the word receiving what is done. A noun can be both the subject and also the object.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Example:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>\u201cMy cat is chasing the mouse\u201d<\/em> \u2013 In this sentence, the cat is doing the action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">So, the cat is the subject and the mouse is the object.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>\u201cMy dog is chasing the cat&#8221; <\/em>\u2013 In this sentence, the cat is receiving the action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">So, the dog is the subject, and the object is the cat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In both of these sentences, \u201c<em>cat<\/em>\u201d is a noun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Understanding the different parts of speech help us understand the structure and meaning of sentences in English.
