<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Modal verbs are a type of auxiliary verb<\/strong>. This means they are always used with a main verb<\/strong> to add meaning; they cannot stand alone as the main verb in a sentence.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

English has several modal verbs, including can, could, may, might, must, will, would, shall,<\/em> and should<\/em>. In this lesson, we\u2019ll focus on four commonly used ones: will<\/strong>, would<\/strong>, shall<\/strong>, and should<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019ll learn how they work, when to use them, and how their meanings can change depending on context. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Will<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

To show desire, preference, choice or consent: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I will accept your offer.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Will you please be quiet?<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To show the future: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It will be a great party.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I will probably go out tonight.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To express capability: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ship will take three hundred guests.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This bottle will hold two litres of wine.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To express determination or insistence: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I will pass my driving test.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I will do as you say.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Would<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

To show preference: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I would rather go to the cinema today.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I would prefer to stay in this weekend.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To express a wish\/desire: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I would like to have more free time.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To offer advice: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If I were you, I would study economics.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shall<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

To make a suggestion: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shall we dance?<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shall I go now?<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shall for obligation in very formal situations: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You shall obey the rules.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students shall not enter here.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There shall be no food and drink on the premises.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Should<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

To give an opinion or a suggestion: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You should stay at home if you are feeling tired.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He should make more compromises.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To express a preference or an idea: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I should walk to work more often.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We should go swimming on Saturday.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To ask for an opinion: <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Should we tell him about our idea?<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n
