In most cases though, an is used before words that begin with vowels (a, e, i, o u.):&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>an a<\/strong>pple&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>an e<\/strong>lephant&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>an i<\/strong>gloo&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>an o<\/strong>ven&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>an u<\/strong>mbrella&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">If a word starts with a consonant sound, use <strong>a<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>a b<\/strong>all&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>a c<\/strong>ar&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>a d<\/strong>oll&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Vowel Sounds<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">It is very important to know that when a word starts with a vowel sound, you should use an. But, sometimes the letter \u2018<strong>u<\/strong>\u2019 is pronounced as \u2018<strong>yu<\/strong>\u2019. Try saying these two words, see if notice how the \u2018<strong>u<\/strong>\u2019 is pronounced in two different ways.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>an unforgettable experience<\/strong> \u2013 the \u2018u\u2019 in unforgettable has a vowel sound so we use an.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>a university<\/strong> \u2013 the \u2018u\u2019 in university has a \u2018yu\u2019 sound so we use a.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This is also the case with the letter \u2018<strong>o<\/strong>\u2019, which may sometimes have a \u2018<strong>wuh<\/strong>\u2019 sound. Compare:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>an octopus<\/strong> &#8211; octopus starts with a vowel sound.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>a one-track mind<\/strong> &#8211; one-track starts with a \u2018wuh\u2019 sound.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Silent h<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Sometimes with words that begin with <strong>h<\/strong>, the h sound is not pronounced. When the \u2018h\u2019 is silent, you decide based on the following letter, which is generally always a vowel. Let&#8217;s look at an example.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">an honour &#8211; the h is silent. We use \u201can\u201d because the h is not pronounced: (h)onour.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">a historic day &#8211; the h is pronounced.
