But first, we have to understand&nbsp;how to <strong>conjugate<\/strong> the past continuous.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Form<\/strong>:<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Was\/were + present participle<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The past continuous is formed using <strong>was\/were (auxiliary verb) <\/strong>with the <strong>present participle (of the main verb).<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">We determine whether to use \u201cwere\u201d or \u201cwas\u201d depending on the <em>pronoun<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The structure when asking a question goes as follows: <strong>was\/were +<\/strong> pronoun<strong> + present participle<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>You <\/em><strong><em>were<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>reading<\/em><\/strong><em> when I walked in.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong><em>Were<\/em><\/strong><em> you <\/em><strong><em>studying<\/em><\/strong><em> when I called you?<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>You <\/em><strong><em>were<\/em><\/strong><em> not <\/em><strong><em>working<\/em><\/strong><em> when I called you.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Past Continuous has 4 main uses\/functions:<\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Use 1 \u2013 an interrupted action in the past<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Here the Past Continuous is used to <strong>indicate a long action that was interrupted<\/strong>. Usually, the action that interrupts the long action is the Past Simple.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Examples<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>I <\/em><strong><em>was studying<\/em><\/strong><em> when Danny called me.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>She <\/em><strong><em>was answering<\/em><\/strong><em> an important e-mail when I interrupted her.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>While I <\/em><strong><em>was jogging<\/em><\/strong><em>, it started raining.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>What <\/em><strong><em>was<\/em><\/strong><em> he <\/em><strong><em>doing<\/em><\/strong><em> when you walked into the room?<\/em>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>John <\/em><strong><em>was waiting<\/em><\/strong><em> for us when we got off the train.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>I broke my leg while I <\/em><strong><em>was skiing<\/em><\/strong><em>.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Use 2 \u2013 parallel actions<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The Past Continuous is used to <strong>indicate that two actions were happening at the same time<\/strong>; hence parallel actions. The conjunction \u201cwhile\u201d is frequently used to express this.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>I <\/em><strong><em>was watching<\/em><\/strong><em> TV while the children were playing outside.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Were you listening<\/em><\/strong><em> while Kevin was explaining the new policy?<\/em>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>While Sarah <\/em><strong><em>was speaking<\/em><\/strong><em> to Fred, Peter was trying to get her attention.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>What were they doing while you <\/em><strong><em>were working<\/em><\/strong><em>?<\/em>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>We <\/em><strong><em>were discussing<\/em><\/strong><em> the new project and having a good time as well.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Use 3 \u2013 describing a mood\/atmosphere<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">We can use the Past Continuous to describe several actions happening at the same time in order to <strong>describe the atmosphere or situation<\/strong> <strong>before or as<\/strong> <strong>a main action occurs<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>When I walked into the bar, Danny and Fred were arguing again. Chris was chatting to the barman with his usual pint. Peter and Sarah were flirting with each other, and Liz was telling the rest of the gang one of her outrageous stories about when she was an actress in the West End. The pub was already smelling of pub food and beer and I just felt that it was so good to be home.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Use 4 \u2013 repetition \u2013 irritation with &#8216;always&#8217;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The Past Continuous with words such as &#8216;always&#8217; or &#8216;constantly&#8217; <strong>indicates something repeated or irritating<\/strong>. Words like &#8216;always&#8217; should be placed between the auxiliary &#8216;be&#8217; and the present participle.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>She <\/em><strong><em>was always<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>coming late<\/em><\/strong><em> for meetings. No wonder she was never promoted.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>He <\/em><strong><em>was always<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>boasting<\/em><\/strong><em> about his financial successes. It irritated us all no end.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>I <\/em><strong><em>was constantly<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>misplacing<\/em><\/strong><em> my glasses. It\u2019s not a problem with contacts now.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>While or when<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Tip<\/strong>: With the Past Continuous sentences have clauses that start with \u2018while\u2019 or \u2018when\u2019. \u2018While\u2019 usually starts the clause with the Past Continuous, \u2018when\u2019 usually starts the clause with the Past Simple.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>It started raining while I was jogging.&nbsp; \/ While I was jogging, it started raining.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>When it started raining, I was jogging. \/ I was jogging when it started raining.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Notice that although the meaning of each pair of sentences is the same, &#8216;while&#8217; or &#8216;when&#8217; shift emphasis.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-11161-c-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-157693ca1142fb2aec1fd70b8a939725\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In this lesson, we\u2019ll look at the past continuous tense to learn how and when it is used.
