It helps us identify <em>which<\/em> person or <em>which<\/em> thing the speaker is talking about. This makes our sentences clearer and more precise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Ex. <em>&#8220;The man who works in the bank is my brother&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Here, \u201cwho works in the bank\u201d is the relative clause. It tells us exactly which man we mean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>When to use who, whose, where, and which<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-extra-large-font-size\"><strong>Who \u2013 for people<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">We use <strong>who<\/strong> to refer to a person. It comes after the noun and is followed by a verb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Examples<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>She\u2019s the teacher who helped me pass my exam.<br>I met a woman who speaks five languages<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:2px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-extra-large-font-size\"><strong>Whose \u2013 to show possession<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Whose replaces his, her, its, or their in a sentence. It&#8217;s followed by a noun, and it shows that something belongs to someone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Examples<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>He\u2019s the student whose phone rang in class.<br>I\u2019ve got a friend whose dad is a pilot.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:2px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-extra-large-font-size\"><strong>Where \u2013 for places<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">We use where to refer to a place. It tells us more about the location mentioned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Examples<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This is the caf\u00e9 where we met last summer.<br>Do you know a shop where I can buy fresh bread?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:2px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-extra-large-font-size\"><strong>Which (or that) &#8211; for things<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">We use which to talk about things or animals. In everyday English, that can be used instead of which, especially in spoken language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Examples<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">I\u2019ve read a book which explains this well.<br>This is the film that everyone\u2019s talking about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size content-type-p\"><strong>Tip<\/strong>: Relative clauses help make your English more fluent and natural.
