{"id":24233,"date":"2025-07-07T08:42:30","date_gmt":"2025-07-07T08:42:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ec.itmonks.dev\/en\/?post_type=free_lesson&#038;p=24233"},"modified":"2025-07-16T09:19:33","modified_gmt":"2025-07-16T09:19:33","slug":"using-have-and-has-2","status":"publish","type":"free_lesson","link":"https:\/\/ec.itmonks.dev\/en\/learn-english-for-free\/grammar\/using-have-and-has-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Using &#8216;have&#8217; and &#8216;has&#8217;\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>&#8220;Malta <strong>has<\/strong> colourful fishing boats.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>&#8220;The fishermen <strong>have<\/strong> traditional boats.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Here are some points to remember when using &#8216;have&#8217; and &#8216;has&#8217;.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Let&#8217;s start with the basics.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">They can both be used to show possession and are important in making the &#8216;perfect tenses&#8217;.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8216;Had&#8217; is the past tense of both &#8216;has&#8217; and &#8216;have&#8217;.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">have&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Have is used with some pronouns and plural nouns:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8216;I have a great English teacher.&#8217;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8216;You have toothpaste on your chin.&#8217;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8216;We have a meeting at 12.&#8217;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8216;Nurses have a difficult job.&#8217;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">has&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Has is used with the third person singular. For example:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8216;She has a great personality.&#8217;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8216;He has a new haircut.&#8217;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8216;The washing machine has a leak in it&#8217;.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8216;It has a hole near the door.&#8217;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">contractions&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">I have = I&#8217;ve&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">you have = you&#8217;ve&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">we have = we&#8217;ve&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">they have = They&#8217;ve&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">he has = he&#8217;s&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">it has = it&#8217;s&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">negative contractions&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">has not = hasn&#8217;t&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">have not = haven&#8217;t&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">had not = hadn&#8217;t&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8216;have&#8217; and &#8216;has&#8217; in questions&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8216;Have you been to Australia?&#8217;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8216;Has Andrew left yet?&#8217;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8216;Who has my pen?&#8217;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8216;Has anyone seen my mobile phone?&#8217;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8216;have got&#8217; and &#8216;have&#8217;&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Both &#8216;have got&#8217; and &#8216;have&#8217; mean the same thing. There is no difference.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8216;I have got an i-phone.&#8217; = &#8216;I have an i-phone&#8217;.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8216;You have got a message.&#8217; = You have a message.&#8217;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8216;She has got no time to sleep.&#8217; =&#8217;She has no time to sleep.&#8217;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8216;have&#8217; and &#8216;has&#8217; verb tenses&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8216;have\/has&#8221; is an important verb in making the &#8216;perfect tense&#8217;:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Present Perfect&nbsp;<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8216;She has lived here for a long time.&#8217;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8216;We have seen this TV show before.&#8217;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8216;I have cut my finger.&#8217;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Past Perfect&nbsp;<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8216;I had already decided not to go before he asked me.&#8217;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8216;They had finished the race before it started raining.&#8217;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8216;She had already left when he arrived&#8217;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">modal verbs: &#8216;have to&#8217;&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&#8216;have to&#8217; is used to mean that something is necessary.
