Let\u2019s take a closer look at the difference between <strong>\u201cIf I were\u201d<\/strong> and <strong>\u201cIf I was\u201d<\/strong>, and when to use each one correctly.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Look at the two following sentences. Why do we use <strong>were<\/strong> in the first sentence and <strong>was<\/strong> in the second.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>If I <\/em><strong><em>were<\/em><\/strong><em> rich, I would buy you a car.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>If she <\/em><strong><em>was<\/em><\/strong><em> feeling sick, it&#8217;s good that she went home.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">They both look like conditional sentences, but the grammar behind them is quite different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"content-type-h3\">When to use \u201cIf I were\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Use <strong>\u201cIf I were\u201d<\/strong> when talking about things that aren&#8217;t true, or when you wish something was true.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This is called the <strong>subjunctive mood<\/strong>, and although it\u2019s becoming less common in everyday speech, it\u2019s still considered correct, especially in formal English.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"content-type-h5\"><em>If I Were Examples&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>If I were you, I would study harder<\/em>. (It is impossible for me to be you; this is advice)&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>If I were less shy, I\u2019d go dancing.&nbsp;<\/em> (This is imaginary)&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>If Jake were here, he\u2019d love this band. <\/em>(He\u2019s not; this is hypothetical)&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Tip:<\/strong> Use <strong>\u201cwere\u201d<\/strong>, not \u201cwas\u201d after I\/he\/she\/it when using the subjunctive mood.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"content-type-h3\">When to use \u201cIf I was\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Use <strong>\u201cIf I was\u201d<\/strong> when talking about <strong>real situations; <\/strong>things that possibly or probably happened in the <strong>past<\/strong>. It is used in the standard past tense, without the subjunctive.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"content-type-h5\"><em>If I Was Examples&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>If I was rude earlier, I apologise.<\/em> (It\u2019s possible that I was rude.)&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>If she was tired, it makes sense that she left early.<\/em> (She may have been tired.)&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>If he was here, I don\u2019t remember.<\/em> (He might have been here.)&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"content-type-h4\">Key tip to remember&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use <strong>\u201cwere\u201d<\/strong> for unreal or imaginary situations (dreams, wishes, advice).&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use <strong>\u201cwas\u201d<\/strong> for real past possibilities.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-rich-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-74a0fa9bf165b582ce879189be205fe4\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>These two phrases often confuse learners and native speakers alike!
