We can get more information into a sentence without the need to start a new one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">There are two types of <strong>relative clauses<\/strong>: defining and non-defining:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>&#8216;Saris which are made of silk are expensive.&#8217; <\/strong>= defining relative clause<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>&#8216;Saris, which are made of silk, are expensive.&#8217;<\/strong> = non-defining relative clause<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The first sentence tells us that silk saris are expensive (we can guess there are other saris made of cheaper materials). This is a defining relative clause.&gt;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The second sentence tells us that saris are expensive and that they are ALL made of silk. The information between the two commas <em>&#8220;,which are made of silk,&#8221;<\/em> is extra information and can be taken out and the sentence meaning remains the same &#8216;Saris are expensive&#8217;. This is a non-defining <em>relative clause<\/em>. This type of clause is common in written English. In spoken English a pause is used instead of a comma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Relative Pronouns<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In both <em>defining <\/em>and <em>non-defining<\/em> <em>relative clauses<\/em> we us the following <strong>relative pronouns<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Who<\/strong> = is for people: &#8216;The person who lives next door is a doctor.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Whose<\/strong> = is used to show ownership\/possession &#8216;The woman whose son you met.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Whom<\/strong> = object pronoun, although &#8216;who&#8217; can be used in informal English. &#8216;I saw the man whom you saw at the party.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Which<\/strong> = is used for things: &#8216;The car which you bought is cool.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>That<\/strong> = Can be used informally instead of \u2018who\u2019 and \u2018which\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Relative Adverbs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Relative adverbs are used like <em>relative pronouns<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>When<\/strong> = is used for a time. <em>&#8216;The time when I last saw you.&#8217;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Where<\/strong> = is used to show ownership\/possession <em>&#8216;The place where I used to live.&#8217;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Why<\/strong> = is used for a reason &#8216;The reason why I am late.&#8217; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reducing Relative Clauses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">If the pronoun (&#8220;that&#8221;, &#8220;who&#8221;, &#8220;which&#8221;) is the <em>object of the verb<\/em>, it can be omitted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In defining relative clauses, when the pronouns &#8216;that&#8217;, &#8216;who&#8217; and &#8216;which&#8217; are the objects of the verb they can be taken out and the meaning of the sentence stays the same. Look:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>&#8216;The man (that) I work with collects snakes.&#8217;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>&#8216;The person (who) I spoke to knows you.&#8217;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>&#8216;The shop (which) she likes has closed down.&#8217;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>When the pronoun is the subject of the sentence it must be used:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>&#8216;The shop which hired her has closed down.&#8217;<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8216;It&#8217;s my brother who lives in Brighton.&#8217; We use relative clauses to give extra information about something.
