Learn English – 7 Idioms about Home

English

Home. We’re all spending more time there than ever. To take your mind occupied, here are 7 timely idioms about home that you can use in your English or at least keep you away from the fridge for a few minutes!

“There’s no place like home”

Home is the best place to be. We’ll let you decide if you think that’s true right now. Most famously used by Dorothy, played by Judy Garland, in the film The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy returns to Kansas from Oz by clicking the heels of her fabulous red shoes together and saying “There’s no place like home”. We wonder if she still feels that way.

“Home is where the heart is”

Similar to the above expression, no matter where you are in the world, home is the place you like best. Whoever came up with this expression has obviously not spent three weeks in lockdown wearing pyjamas all day eating crisps.

“Where ever I lay my hat, that’s my home”

Now you probably won’t remember this, but there was a time before all this business started when people used to travel to different places. Crazy right? This idiom basically means it doesn’t matter where you are, as long as you feel comfortable, you feel at home.

“Charity begins at home”

This idiom means you should help family and close friends before helping others. It’s better to be generous to your family before helping strangers.

“Home run”

This one comes from baseball, it describes a hit that allows the player to make a complete round of the bases and score a run. Likewise, this idiom means to do something very successfully.

“Close to home”

When a remark is close to home, it makes you feel uncomfortable or upset because it is about a sensitive or very personal subject. You have an emotional reaction because one can strongly relate to it on a personal level.

“Home free”

Where you are comfortable and at ease with yourself is your home, regardless where you were born or brought up.
